Outer membrane permeation of Bacteroides fragilis by cephalosporins.

چکیده
Outer membrane permeation of Bacteroides fragilis by cephalosporins was examined by a previously described method. The permeation parameters of cephalosporins in B. fragilis were close to 10(-5) cm3/min per microgram of cell dry weight. These values were about an order of magnitude lower than those in Escherichia coli. In B. fragilis, the permeation was not directly proportional to the hydrophilicity of cephalosporins, and the ion selectivity was weak.

Beta-lactamase-mediated imipenem resistance in Bacteroides fragilis.
Imipenem has excellent antimicrobial activity owing in part to beta-lactamase stability. We found that only 2 of over 350 Bacteroides fragilis group clinical isolates were resistant to imipenem, with an MIC of more than 16 micrograms/ml. These two isolates from the Tufts Anaerobe Laboratory (TAL) were resistant to all other beta-lactam agents tested. The organisms were able to inactivate imipen...

متن کاملHuman immune response to an iron-repressible outer membrane protein of Bacteroides fragilis.
Under conditions of iron starvation, Bacteroides fragilis expresses various iron-repressible outer membrane proteins (IROMPs). A 44-kDa protein appears to be one of the major outer membrane proteins (OMPs) in B. fragilis under iron stress and plays a role in heme uptake by this bacterium. To determine whether the 44-kDa IROMP of B. fragilis is expressed in vivo and whether this protein is immun...
متن کاملDNA Inversion Regulates Outer Membrane Vesicle Production in Bacteroides fragilis
Phase changes in Bacteroides fragilis, a member of the human colonic microbiota, mediate variations in a vast array of cell surface molecules, such as capsular polysaccharides and outer membrane proteins through DNA inversion. The results of the present study show that outer membrane vesicle (OMV) formation in this anaerobe is also controlled by DNA inversions at two distantly localized promote...
متن کاملEfficient utilization of complex N-linked glycans is a selective advantage for Bacteroides fragilis in extraintestinal infections.
Bacteroides fragilis is the most common anaerobe isolated from clinical infections, and in this report we demonstrate a characteristic of the species that is critical to their success as an opportunistic pathogen. Among the Bacteroides spp. in the gut, B. fragilis has the unique ability of efficiently harvesting complex N-linked glycans from the glycoproteins common to serum and serous fluid. T...
